How to start selling cleaning products with R500

You don't need to buy a warehouse of stock to test whether your neighbours need affordable cleaning essentials. Start with the numbers and keep enough money for delivery, transport and unexpected costs.

1. Choose one product people use repeatedly

Dishwashing liquid, bleach and all-purpose cleaner are familiar household products. Talk to prospective customers first: ask what size they prefer, what they pay now and whether they would collect or need delivery.

2. Calculate your purchasing limit

The Restore Hydro Clean catalogue lists 750 ml dishwashing liquid at R25. Buying 12 bottles would cost R300 before any shipping, leaving R200 of a R500 budget for transport, packaging, promotion and reserve cash. A 20-bottle purchase would use the entire R500 before those extra costs. Check live prices and availability before ordering.

3. Work out the margin before advertising

If your full bottle cost is R25 and you sell it for R35, the gross difference is R10 before transport, packaging, refunds, marketing and tax. For 12 bottles sold that would be R120 gross difference, not guaranteed profit. Prices are examples only; customers choose what they are willing to pay.

4. Take genuine orders and repeat

Publish your real prices and delivery terms, track customer requests, and restock only after you know which products sell. Don't claim income or sales you haven't actually earned.
